A short video circulating on Instagram compresses Peter Thiel’s four Nashville lectures on the Antichrist into three contrarian ideas 2. It is built on a long Pirate Wires report by an attendee, G. B. Rango, published on 25 October 2026 1. We read what is publicly available of that report, the other published accounts of the lectures and Thiel’s own on-the-record statements, and checked the quotations and the Bible verses.
This is not an article about theology, and it takes no side in it. It is about one idea from the lectures that every founder and investor should think about: what happens to business when fear of technology becomes the reason to control it. Thiel’s views are presented as his views; statements marked as views are opinions.
01What happened in Nashville
The Pamphleteer, a local publication, and Meriwether Academy hosted four lectures by Thiel on four consecutive Mondays, from 28 September to 19 October 2026, each an hour-long talk followed by an hour of questions moderated by Peter Robinson of the Hoover Institution 16. The event was closed-door and off the record 3. Thiel had given earlier versions in San Francisco and Rome 14.
There is no official transcript. What is known comes from attendees and from outlets that obtained recordings: Pirate Wires’ author reconstructed the talks from memory and notes 1; the Nashville Scene reviewed transcripts and recordings 45; Arena Magazine published another attendee account 6. Pirate Wires reports that Thiel called himself a “small-o orthodox Christian” and said Scripture “should be taken seriously, though sometimes not completely literally.” 1
The reel that made the lectures travel is a fair summary in places and a compression in others. One example: it quotes Thiel as saying that when America is done, “the West is done, the world is done” 2. The Nashville Scene, working from a recording of the final lecture, reports a longer sentence 5:
When America is done, the West is done, Christendom is done, and the world is done.

02Idea one: history has a direction
Thiel’s first move is about time. Drawing on Daniel 12:4, “many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased,” he presented the biblical view of history as linear rather than cyclical, and called Daniel “the first true historian” 69. He made the same argument in writing in 2025 8.
From there, Pirate Wires reports, Thiel argued with René Girard that Christianity is “upstream of science”: when a society can no longer blame a scapegoat, such as a woman burned as a witch, it has to start looking for natural causes 1. That is Thiel’s interpretation of Girard, not a settled historical finding.
The historical episode it points to is real. The physician Johann Weyer, in De praestigiis daemonum (1563), attributed the behaviour of accused witches to what he called melancholy, a form of mental illness 1012. The Jesuit Friedrich Spee, who had heard the confessions of accused witches and came to believe most of them were innocent, published his attack on the trials, Cautio Criminalis, anonymously in 1631 1011.
03Idea two: the old dream of beating death
The second idea in the reel is that radical life extension is not anti-Christian 2. It echoes texts that promise an end to death, such as Revelation 21:4, “there shall be no more death,” and Jesus’s instruction in Matthew 10:8 to “raise the dead” 9.
Thiel has said something close to this on the record. In 2025 he told Ross Douthat that early modern science promised “radical life extension, immortality,” and that if Christianity “promised you a physical resurrection,” science “was not going to succeed unless it promised you the exact same thing.” 7 His complaint is that the ambition faded: in his telling, science became afraid of itself after 1945, and a new elite turned to managing risk rather than delivering progress 6.
04Idea three: “peace and safety”
This is the core of Thiel’s argument, and the part that matters for business. He reads 1 Thessalonians 5:3, “when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them,” as the slogan of the Antichrist 79. In June 2025 he put it plainly:
The way the Antichrist would take over the world is you talk about Armageddon nonstop. You talk about existential risk nonstop.
Peter Thiel to Ross Douthat, The New York Times, June 2025 7
In Thiel’s view, the danger is a world government that gains total power by promising to protect us from catastrophe: nuclear war, environmental disaster, bioweapons, and now AI 7. In Nashville he said that “the risk of a totalitarian one-world government” is the existential risk “nobody seems to want to discuss.” 4
These proposals exist, and they come from serious, sincere people. In 2023 the AI researcher Eliezer Yudkowsky called for a worldwide, indefinite moratorium: “Shut down all the large GPU clusters” and “Track all GPUs sold.” 13 Thiel does not say there are no risks. He said it is dangerous “to focus on just one risk” 4, and, according to an attendee, framed the task as walking a fine line between catastrophe and an “unjust peace” in the form of a global AI control regime 6.
05The restrainer
For the force that holds this back, Thiel uses an old word: the katechon, the “restrainer” of 2 Thessalonians 2, “he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way” 69. In the final lecture he named the United States as the last form of the Roman Empire and the last restrainer 56. He also warned, according to an attendee, that a power strong enough to hold back the Antichrist is strong enough to be captured by it 6.
This is a theological and political claim, and reactions were sharply divided: the Nashville Scene was strongly critical of the series 45, while Arena Magazine described an audience that ranged from aligned to “deeply-skeptical.” 6 We take no position on it. What interests us is the dilemma underneath it, because every company now faces a small version of it.
06Fear or building: what it means for your business
While the debate runs, the market is not waiting. On Cloudflare’s network in June 2026, bots and agents generated 57.5% of HTTP requests, against 42.5% from humans 14. Between January and April 2026, 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click 15. The four pillars marketing stood on are cracking at the same time: a person on the other side, exposure as attention, behaviour as intent, persuasion as strategy.
